Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is a regulatory legal body authorized under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 (FSS Act). FOOD SAFETY AND STANDARDS ACT, 2006
No. 34 OF 2006 [23rd August 2006]- An Act to fortify the laws relating to food and to establish the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India for laying down science-based standards for articles of food and to regulate their manufacture, storage, distribution, sale, and import, to ensure availability of safe and wholesome food for human consumption and matters related therewith or incidental thereto.
Various Act for Food security in India
- FSS Act, 2006 combines various acts & orders that had first handled food-related issues in different Ministries and Departments, such as–
- Prevention of Food Adulteration Act, 1954
- Fruit Products Order, 1955
- Meat Food Products Order, 1973
- Vegetable Oil Products (Control) Order, 1947
- Edible Oils Packaging (Regulation) Order 1988
- Milk and Milk Products Order, 1992
- These were revoked after the commencement of the FSS Act, 2006.
- FSSAI was consequently built-in 2008 but work within the Food Authority finally began in 2011 after its Rules and key Regulations were notified.
- This marked a transfer from a multi-level to a single line of control with a focus on self-compliance rather than a pure administrative regime.

Structure of FSSAI
- The FSSAI includes a Chairperson and twenty-two members out of which one – third are to be women.

- The prime responsibility for implementation is large with the State Food Safety Commissioners.
Regulation under FSSAI
Section 92 (1) of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 enables the Food Authority to make regulations/standards inconsistent with this Act and Rules made thereunder. After the enactment of the FSS Act, 2006 FSSAI has selected six principal regulations by extensive consultation and deliberations/ meetings with various stakeholders. These regulations have been published in the Gazette of India on 1st August 2011 and came into force on 5th August 2011.
These regulations/standards are further analyzed and many new regulations are suggested taking into account the latest developments in food science, food consumption design, new products and additives, advancement in the processing technology and food scientific methods and also to bridge the gap among national and international standards for food products.
That formulation and revision of regulations/ standards involve different stages. After a suggestion by the Scientific Panel, following the proper process mentioned including validation by the Scientific Committee a regulations/ standards are certified by the Food Authority. After asking the comments of stakeholders and their considerations, the final notification is circulated for implementation.
In addition to the Six major regulations declared on 1st August 2011, following new regulations are apprised. These include:
- Food Safety and Standards (Food or Health Supplements, Nutraceuticals, Foods for Special Dietary Uses, Foods for Special Medical Purpose, Functional Foods and Novel Food) Regulations, 2016
- Food Safety and Standards (Food Recall Procedure) Regulation, 2017
- Food Safety and Standards (Import) Regulation, 2017
- Food Safety and Standards (Approval for Non-Specified Food and Food Ingredients) Regulations, 2017.
- Food Safety and Standards (Organic Food) Regulation, 2017.
Objectives of FSSAI role in food quality
- FSSAI outlines regulations to lay down the standards and guidelines about food articles & set up a proper system of executing several standards.

Research: The R&D department is accountable for research in the following purposes:

- Heart Attack Rewind: Heart Attack Rewind is an initiative by FSSAI to eliminate trans-fat from India by the year 2022. This initiative campaigned across India.
